1 Billion New Connections
An article on National Public Radio’s website by Alva Noe, a professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley, talks about how to make time slow down for you by adding variety to everything you do.
The author states, “We are now actualized habits. Want to live forever? Break your habits.”
By this, I believe he means that the things we habitually do each day have come to define who we are. Those routines we engage in day-after-day have the effect of becoming almost unnoticeable with respect to the time involved. the more routine and habitual our lives become, the less we notice the passing of time and it flies past us at an alarming rate, seemingly leaving us with less than we need.
It would seem counter-intuitive to add variety to what we do, to actually do more and different things in order to slow the passing of time. After all, the things we already do and have some proficiency in, now take less time than they did when they were new to us – that is, when we were learning how to do them. Doesn’t that mean we should have more time?
One of the essential elements to being in a learning state, movement with attention, was the subject of my last blog post. Variation is another of the Nine Essentials For Lifelong Vitality.
Variation causes your brain to wake up, to take notice of what’s happening, perceive differences and to recognize relationships, similarities and dissimilarities.

@Arlan Murata,
Thanks, Arlan.
The one thing that’s definitely going to change is the layout.
Hope you like the new one.
I do feel more in congruency with my message now.

Hey Justin… fascinating stuff, when it comes to time, our perception and how we “spend” it …. literally.
We can never get it back, so let’s hope we use it wisely. You’ve got a great practice here to ensure that we make the most of our time!

@Chris McCargar,
Thanks, Chris.
The important thing about how we spend our time is that we spend it in activity that builds mental capacity rather than encouraging mental stagnation.
If we can find ways to stimulate brain growth as much as possible,we are combating the prevalent influences in our world today – television, most of radio, almost all newspapers and magazines, and much of what’s on the internet.
I’m definitely not against “down-time”, but I believe in making even recreation a time for just that, re-creation.

Very interesting post Justin. One thing that adds variety for me is meeting and connecting with new people. Every person is different and people are among the most interesting topics in the world! If this is true for others, then networking and network marketing should be one of the most brain-stimulating occupations a person could undertake!

@Phil Jackson,
Phil,
I agree, every person is so different from the last and everyday is filled with different experiences with a myriad of different personalities. I think any job can be perceived that way, and if so, any job can then become a brain-stimulating occupation.
Unfortunately, not everyone has that attitude toward their job.
I have found that most network marketers, especially successful ones, do have that sort of attitude. So for those people, yes, network marketing is one of the most brain-stimulating occupations.
Best of Life!

Wow, 1 billion connections per minute? That’s awesome. Really makes me feel like anything is possible … which it is!
Variety really is the spice of life. I love trying new things ~ in fact, when I get too habitual I feel like I lose energy, inspiration, creativity and passion ~ like I just stop growing. Stimulating those connections is definitely what makes me feel alive, just as you spoke about.
Thanks for the great message, Justin. You are fabulous with your videos!

Beth,
Thanks for the encouragement with the videos.
That feeling when you lose energy, inspiration, creativity and passion is definitely when you can stop growing, stop growing, and even start regressing, sometimes.
I think this is one of the most common causes of some cases of Alzheimers (there is a famous study done with nuns in a convent that lends credence to this theory) and I also believe it’s the chief cause of kids telling their parents that “there’s nothing to do.”
Spice of life, yes!

I think the sensation of time passing quickly or slowly is like an illusion. In one sense it seems like something was just yesterday; then again, it seems like so long ago. A little like looking at an optical illusion where you are not sure whether you see 12 blocks or 7 (or something like that). Variety helps break boredom and most would say that boredom very frequently results in the sensation that time moves slowly. I do agree that variety helps with learning. Trainers and instructors are always told to vary their methods, for example.
